Seeking Justice and Accountability for the Tragic Death of Dr. Vwaere Diaso

The Issue

We (Health Hub Africa) stand united in grief and determination following the tragic loss of Dr. Vwaere Diaso at General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island. Driven by the urgency for justice and accountability, we are compelled to demand immediate action to prevent such heart-wrenching incidents in the future.

We acknowledge the recent update from the Lagos State Government, detailing the suspension of the General Manager of the Lagos State Infrastructure and Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA) and the removal of the Facility Managers responsible for the elevator accident that led to Dr. Diaso's passing. While these steps signal a commitment to addressing the issue, there remains an imperative for comprehensive measures to prevent any recurrence.

Therefore, we come together with four crucial demands:

Comprehensive Audit of Elevators: We respectfully request that the Lagos State Government conducts a thorough and independent audit of all elevators in public institutions across the state. This audit should include a meticulous examination of safety features, mechanical performance, and compliance with industry standards. The goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals who utilize these elevators.

Immediate Implementation of Safety Protocols: We call upon the Lagos State Government to enforce stringent safety protocols for elevator maintenance, installation, and operation in all public institutions. This includes rigorous adherence to established safety standards and regular inspections to detect and address potential hazards promptly.

Transparency and Accountability: We urge the Lagos State Government to ensure complete transparency in the ongoing investigation into the elevator accident. Those found responsible for negligence or any misconduct must be held accountable under the law, setting a precedent that prioritizes the safety of citizens and healthcare workers.

Infrastructure and Emergency response skills upgrade: We also use this avenue to push for infrastructure upgrade and maintenancere of all LASG medical facilities as well as urgent training and retraining of medical personnel on advanced life support and ensuring facilities for emergency resuscitation are readily available. We should be better prepared to handle emergency situations like the future.

Support and Compensation: The family of the departed doctor deserves both justice and support during this harrowing time. We appeal to the Lagos State Government to establish a compensation fund to provide financial assistance to the grieving family. Additionally, it is crucial that healthcare professionals facing negligence or unsafe conditions are guaranteed legal and financial backing.

By lending your voice to this petition, you become an advocate for Dr. Vwaere Diaso's memory and a catalyst for essential change.

Together, we have the power to shape a future where tragedies like these are prevented through diligent oversight, transparent accountability, and unwavering commitment to safety.

Stand with us as we demand a comprehensive audit of elevators, the immediate implementation of safety protocols, infrastructure and emergency response skills upgrade, compensation for the family and a commitment to transparency and accountability.

Together, let us ensure that Dr. Diaso's legacy fuels transformative reforms that safeguard lives and restore trust in our healthcare facilities.
