“We are not changing history, we are correcting it!”

We call on Chairman Mendelson of the DC City Council to schedule a hearing before the end of 2018 in order to enact the “Indigenous Peoples’ Day Amendment Act of 2017”. Link to B22-0503 http://lims.dccouncil.us/Download/38911/B22-0503-Introduction.pdf

Bill 22-0503 was introduced by Council member Anita Bonds on Oct. 3, 2017 and since then, co-sponsors Council members Grosso, Cheh, Silverman, Nadeau, Allen and R. White have urged, by a proposed resolution, to change the name of the Columbus Day holiday to Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This bill rightfully acknowledges Indigenous peoples as the original inhabitants of North and South America. The current holiday serves to celebrate the genocide of indigenous people and the death and destruction that followed Columbus' arrival.

We strongly urge the Chairman to end the holiday that embodies the mythical history that glorifies Christopher Columbus and instead create a day that honors the 500 plus years of Native American and other indigenous peoples’ existence in the Americas.
