Sarah Galatioto-Ruff started this petition to Avondale Estates Mayor Jonathan Elmore and

In support of Avondale Estates moving toward its stated goals of fair and equal treatment of all people in its policing and community leadership, and in light of the need to support Black, Indigenous and People of Color and to ensure we undo structural racism in policies and procedures, we want the Avondale Estates Board of Mayor and Commissioners to understand the importance of their actions. We request they pledge to Implement the 21st Century Policing Implementation Guide which includes:

  1. Undertake a review of police policies and practices and how they have been implemented, including use of force, community policing and community-police interaction, and potential racial profiling.
  2. Engage a larger community in a dialogue about police policies and practices in the city, including a diverse range of voices, experiences, and stories. Provide an opportunity for everyone to speak about their experience of policing in Avondale Estates. Include those who live in Avondale Estates but also those work, shop, or learn in our city. We need to look at the impact of our practices.
  3. Report and share the findings of this review with the community and seek feedback on proposed changes.
  4. Reform police practices and policies, rewriting these policies with community support and input. Continue to commit to a use of force policy that adheres to best practices, eliminates dangerous tactics, and mandates de-escalation. Codify expectations and norms for community-police interaction and enhance training and accountability for all city police.

This review and reform is a critical step toward addressing historical legacies of white supremacy and discriminatory policing in the city and is vital to the future of Avondale Estates.
