We Demand School Safety and Mental Health Support

The Issue

This petition is not just about this incident. It’s about making sure our kids are safe, our schools are equipped, and our system doesn’t fail another child—whether victim or perpetrator. School is home away from home, so we all need to do better collectively (parents, teachers, counselors). While the recent incident involved students of Asian descent, this petition aims to protect all students-regardless of background, race, or gender. When one student is hurt, all of us feel it.

Let's be Proactive, not Reactive in Preventing Violence...

We, the parents and community members of Queens, NY, are heartbroken and furious after a brutal group attack on two teenage girls near a wooded area at Kissena Corridor Park (Flushing, NY) —an incident involving students from various schools. Their painful ordeal lasted nearly two hours of getting stomped on, kicked, beaten, forceful hair cutting, ending with robbery.

While some of the alleged perpetrators have been identified, the rest remain at large. This story is still developing and under investigation at the time this petition is created.

On the evening of May 2nd, 2025, after playing basketball, two girls were ambushed by a group of about seven teens. One girl was beaten in the head and body with a metal bat, while the others stole her sneakers and phone. The assault was vicious and intentional—and it could have ended far worse.

This was not random violence. These teens reportedly knew each other and had ongoing issues. That makes this even more terrifying, because it shows that unresolved conflict and mental health issues are building up without intervention.

Our suggestions are:

1. Increased School Safety Measures:
More trained safety officers on and near school grounds such as at parks. Increase coordination with NYPD in areas students frequent after school.
2. Licensed Mental Health Counselors on site:
A possible and practical solution is to expand and centralize on site mental health counseling at schools which can be fulfilled via Internship hours through Graduate Level Mental Health programs (CUNY or SUNY)-a win-win situation.
3. Conflict Intervention and Violence Prevention Programs:
Schools must invest in restorative justice, peer mediation, and mentorship to help students manage emotions and resolve conflicts constructively.

Disclaimer:
This petition and any accompanying materials are intended solely to raise awareness and advocate for improved school safety and mental health support. The individuals involved in the referenced incident are not named or personally identified. All descriptions are based on publicly available information and reporting. No assumptions of guilt are being made. We respect the legal process and believe in due process for all individuals. Council Member Sandra Ung expedited the installation of seven new cameras in the area as an immediate response to recent concerns. We commend her leadership, compassion, and advocacy, and this petition is not meant to diminish or downplay those efforts. Rather, it seeks to address the root causes of bullying and violence through long-term, preventative solutions.

On May 17th, this petition was started by a group of District 25 parents who wanted to spread advocacy and raise awareness. Although the incident took place in District 25 (Queens), the purpose of this petition goes beyond one district or one borough. It aims to protect all students and to prevent harm in the future.

With that, WE say thank you...
