The Issue
We all feel the effects of having too few trees in Barangay li Sur, San Juan, La Union. Children need green spaces to play, and everyone breathes easier with cleaner air. Without enough trees, our town will be more hotter weather as studies have shown that areas with less tree cover can experience temperatures up to 7°C higher than areas with healthy tree canopies. This temperature increase can have significant impacts on human health, air quality, and overall livability and more vulnerable to floods as according to MANILA, Philippines report San Juan is prone to flooding, particularly during heavy rains. Recent infrastructure projects, such as a ₱29 million flood control structure in Barangay Taboc, aim to mitigate these risks, but the underlying issues related to deforestation remain a concern. The lack of trees exacerbates flooding risks by reducing natural water absorption and increasing runoff.
Ili Sur needs more trees to improve our community. Without enough trees, our area will become significantly hotter, especially affecting children and the elderly. Increased heat will lead to health problems and discomfort. According to statistics hotter weather poses significant health risks, particularly in urban areas with inadequate tree cover. Studies show that a 1°C increase in temperature can lead to an 18% rise in heat-related illnesses. This includes heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and even death, especially among vulnerable populations like the elderly and children. Additionally, hotter temperatures exacerbate existing health conditions like asthma, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease. The lack of trees will also worsen flooding, damaging homes and businesses. Severe flooding will disrupt our lives and cause economic distress. Trees play a crucial role in mitigating flooding risks. They act as natural sponges, absorbing rainwater through their roots and reducing surface runoff. Research indicates that a mature tree can absorb up to 1,000 gallons of water annually. Furthermore, trees create a barrier effect, slowing down the flow of water and reducing the severity of floods. Studies have shown that areas with significant tree cover experience less severe flooding compared to deforested areas. Therefore, planting and preserving trees are essential for creating a healthier and more resilient community.
Ili Sur is getting too hot, with temperatures regularly reaching 31-33°C. This extreme heat makes people sick, especially children and the elderly. Government, people and entrepreneurs–We need to act now. Our "MagsiMULA Tayo!" tree-planting program will help. Trees provide shade and cool the air, making our community safer and healthier. They also help prevent floods. A greener Ili Sur will be better for everyone – a more beautiful and comfortable place to live. Let's plant trees today!
A single step means a start, and together we create change as we step as one.
