Provide the option for mixed races to choose status!
The Issue
It is true that the black community has a great history of injustuce. It is also true for those of mixed races. It is not clear why mixed people have been obligated to choose to identity as solely as African American. When it comes down to comparative victimology these two idefinity as the same kind of unjustice.
We reserve the right to solely claim any ethnicity that is apart of us.
My story:
This is something that has bothered me ever since I was five years old. I can remember brining home the emergency contact form on the first day of Kindergarten. At the top of the top of the form it tells you to correct any information that would have been inacuratre. Maybe your parent would change the name of someone allowed to pick you up, or add their new cell phone number. Nothing ever got changed on mine. It always had my grandmother's address on it and information all throughout grade school. But there was always this one thing that seemed to bother me. On the top of the page under my name it stated that I was African American. I can remember crossing it out and putting that I was Caucasian. Now, I am mixed-racial both Caucasian and African Amefican. My thoughts back then at the age of five is that it was a mistake and they would easily change it. Year after year I did the same thing on every emergency contact form and then on forms when I got my license, and year after year it still showed me as African American! I have been raised in a white family, my DNA will tell you that the pigment in my skin is the color it is because of my white Mother, and you're telling me I'm obligated to claim different then what I know to be true. I'm not OK with that.
I want ALL people of ALL mixed races to be able to identify however they want to on their Emergency contact form, Driver's License, Social security card, Medical papers, ect.
You should have the option to put Two or More races on your Drivers License.
You should have the option to put Caucasian, if you are half Caucasian.
If you are Africa America and Asian, you should have the option to check Asian.
And I'm not saying we shouldn't mark African American, be proud of who you are! We need to make American proud of who we are too. I am saying that we need the right to make the decision on what we want to claim.
This people, is not OK! By Marking us as African Americans only that is giving the governement the power to make us accused persons and criminalize us after they segregate us.
