We Can Only Beat Plastic Pollution in Oceans Together

The Issue

Plastic pollution is a global crisis. Oceans are paying the price because of millions of tons of plastic waste in the sea. The plastic makes its way into marine ecosystems and harms numerous marine species. Whether it be sea turtles eating plastic bags thinking it’s a jellyfish or whales ingesting plastic debris, the consequences are devastating. "Sharp plastics can rupture internal organs and bags can cause intestinal blockages leaving turtles unable to feed, resulting in starvation. Even if they survive, consuming plastic can make turtles unnaturally buoyant, which can stunt their growth and lead to slow reproduction rates." Pollution not only disrupts wildlife and makes the animals endangered, but it also contributes to the release of greenhouse gases.

To address this issue we all need to take action. Governments must implement stricter policies and regulations on single-use plastics. People need to make their lifestyles more sustainable and change the economy. Innovators need to continue to develop technology that can help us clean our oceans. Industries need to adopt sustainable practices. It is a group effort to save our oceans, but very doable.

We need to work together. Governments, businesses, individuals, and innovators can significantly reduce plastic pollution and protect our oceans. We need to make conscious choices and advocate for change when we can. We can ensure a healthier planet for future generations.
