Petitioning the Diocese of Pittsburgh, PA

The Issue

St. John Vianney Church (originally St. George Church) has been a beacon of hope in the Allentown neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA since it's completion in 1912 by the German Roman Catholic St. George Parish.

Over 100 years later on July 26, 2015, the Diocese of Pittsburgh proposed a plan to close the church and a month later added a proposal to cannibalize and demolish the church.

In addition to being a vital location for worship, ministry and community outreach, our church is an irreplaceable structure.

It is a beloved landmark that defines the skyline of the Allentown neighborhood and memorializes the generations of devoted parishioners who served, donated and volunteered their talent, time and resources to establish St. George Church.

In August 2015, our group of parishioners formed the St. George Church Preservation Society (SGCPS) to protect and preserve the church.

  • SGCPS has offered to fully support the reopening and restoration of the church in order to preserve it and keep a Catholic presence in Allentown and surrounding communities.

The St. George Church Preservation Society is reaching out for support and donations from the public, parishioners, former parishioners, alumni, the Allentown community, those of German heritage, the historic preservation community and all of their family and friends.

These are the people who make up the very large extended legacy of St. George Church throughout the Country and beyond.
