We are calling for the government to legislate the Film and TV industry!
The Issue
The Independent Directors Association Africa and Directors Guild of South Africa is calling for the legislation of the Film and Television industry. We are calling upon our government officials - particularly those in the Department of Labor and Law- to create robust legislation that ensures fair treatment for all Film and Television industry employees. The Film and Television industry is a significant sector of our economy, employing thousands of people. However, it lacks comprehensive labor laws that protect the rights and welfare of its workers. This lack of legislation leaves many workers vulnerable to exploitation, unfair wages, and unhealthy working conditions at the hands of some producers. This cannot carry on much longer, we need to take action and immediately. Let us not be ignorant and pretend as if the issues faced in our industry do not exist or that they only affect a certain group of people. The truth is these issues affect all of us. We cannot sit back and fold our hands and let these producers continue to manipulate and enforce industry practices for their own benefits at the cost of other crew members. We need to take action and fast. If we don't, the livelihoods of directors, writers and below the line crew members continues to be at stake. We need the Department of Human Rights to be involved as well in matters of our industry. To ensure that everyone is treated fairly and with dignity. We are the change we want to see, it's time to stand together and fight for this legislation. By signing this petition, together we can be advocates of transformation, change, equality and human dignity through legislating our industry.
Lastly, we ask that you would partner with us financially. These funds are to cover all the legal costs associated with the fight for this legislation. This is an expensive fight to fight as we are taking on people in positions of power. These funds will strictly go towards our industry legislation and policy funding. Together we can change the state of South Africa's Film industry.
