We are all Treaty People - Indigenous visitors are welcome in Niagara Falls
The Issue
Indigenous peoples from any community in Ontario are welcome in Niagara Falls.
On June 26, the Niagara Falls Review published an article stating that Niagara Falls "has done more than enough" to support evacuees from northern Indigenous communities, and that the evacuees are a scourge on the city's tourism industry.
We, the people of Niagara Falls, condemn the racism in this article. We understand that we are living and working on the traditional territories of the Neutrals, the Mississauga, and the Haudenosaunee peoples. It is incumbent upon us, as settlers in this place, to welcome Indigenous visitors in a spirit of respect and reconciliation.
We call on the governments of Canada and Ontario to create a sustainable system for safe drinking water in Kashechewan as soon as possible. We call on the government of Niagara Falls to do whatever it can to create a safe and welcoming community for Indigenous visitors.
