We are advocating for stronger measures to ensure newly registered nurses are supported
The Issue
I am a newly qualified nurse, ready and committed to serving patients and contributing to the healthcare system.
However, the satisfaction of achieving this milestone quickly turned to frustration as I searched for job openings, only to find none available for newly qualified nurses like myself.
This unfortunate situation affects not only me but countless other fresh nursing graduates ready and eager to enter the workforce. We've invested time, money, and effort into our training, motivated by the ambition to serve the community, yet the job market seems unwelcoming to new entrants.
Despite the ongoing demand for healthcare services, there's a significant gap in initiatives and programs designed to incorporate newly qualified nurses into the workforce. Instead of prioritizing the influx of experienced personnel only, there should be structured transition programs, mentorship opportunities, and collaboration between educational institutions and healthcare providers to bridge this gap—ensuring all qualified nurses can contribute to the healthcare system.
This is crucial not only for our careers but also for the betterment of patient care, which relies on a workforce full of passionate and energetic professionals fresh out of respected institutions.
We are not asking for fewer nurses to be trained. We are asking for better workforce planning, timely recruitment, and fair access to employment opportunities.
I urge healthcare authorities, government bodies, and educational institutions to recognize this pressing issue and work towards implementing sustainable solutions. Establish pathways that welcome new nurses, not only to help us build fulfilling careers but to enhance the resilience and responsiveness of the healthcare sector.
Please sign this petition to advocate for comprehensive training-to-employment programs for newly qualified nurses and to help remove barriers blocking our transition from graduation to employment. Let's ensure no nurse's dedication to their dreams goes unrecognized or wasted.
This situation has serious consequences. It affects not only our financial stability and mental well-being but also the efficiency of healthcare delivery.
We call on NHS Trusts, Health Education England, and the Department of Health and Social Care to:
• Ensure timely recruitment pathways for all newly qualified nurses
• Improve workforce planning to match training numbers with job availability
• Increase transparency around job availability and recruitment timelines
• Provide support and transition programmes for newly qualified nurses entering the workforce.
If you are a nurse, student nurse, healthcare worker, or someone who cares about the future of our healthcare system, please sign and share this petition. Together, we can push for a system that supports its workforce and delivers better care for all.
