Wayne State University charges students a fee known as the "student service fee" every semester, regardless of whether or not they live on campus. Below is the description of the fee:

Undergraduate students are assessed a $37.82 fee per credit. The Student Services Fee is used primarily to maintain, upgrade and replace student computing and technology resources on campus. A small portion is also used to fund student activities on campus, and to enhance programs directed toward improving on-campus activities, including athletics.

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Wayne State has taken several actions to make the transition to remote/online classes possible for the winter semester. This includes making classes Pass/Fail. Through this, the university acknowledges several factors (quoted from the Wayne State Credit/No Credit petition).

1. Some students may lack accessibility to the required tools, such as wireless internet, to conduct their learning online. This is especially the case after Governor Whitmer's decision to shut down in-house dining at the majority of locations across the state. It would not be fair to those students to be held to the same standard as those that do have access. This simple accessibility issue could cause some students' GPA to lower.

2. Some students may have difficulties learning online versus being face to face with a trained professor. It is not equitable to change the way we have to learn and expect the outcome to be the same. This again might cause a students GPA to be lowered.

3. Some students may not feel prepared for exams or other important assessments. This will cause lower test results and cause students' GPA to be lower than normal.

4. Many students who have jobs in the service industry are now out of work, and have either no money coming in or are forced to file for unemployment. In these extremely stressful situations school gets put on the back burner, and it’s not the students fault.

Not only do all of these factors make it difficult for students to learn, but they are also costly. A student taking 18 credit hours will have to pay up to $680.76 for resources that they do not have access to for both the half of winter semester and the entire spring semester, since spring courses have been moved to online as well. These are resources that each and every Wayne State student pays for when they enroll into the university that we do not have access to anymore beyond what our professors, advisors, and peers post on Academica and Canvas.

In addition, the stimulus check that is supposed to "relieve" American families will not apply to a SIGNIFICANT population of college students who are claimed as a dependent on their families tax return, meaning many college students will not only be unemployed, but the government has turned a blind-eye on those of us who are struggling to make ends meet at home with our OWN income that supplements our families.

We are asking Wayne State to reconsider the terms of their student service fee for both the remainder of the winter semester and the entirety of the spring semester, as thousands of students will be affected in their academic plans as well as their financial well-being.
