Why this petition matters

Dear President Uhuru Kenyatta,

We as students of the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa would like to propose a way of helping Kenya with its marine and plastic pollution problem which is commonly found at the coast of Mombasa. These are major issues that need to be dealt with for people and ecosystems as well as the environment in Mombasa can survive to the fullest.

We'd like to interact with the Mombasa community to raise awareness about our unclean beaches and marine life in order to conserve marine life and ecosystems. We will start by spreading awareness in our community through posters, videos and events such as beach cleanups. We will then collaborate with the government to address the problem of marine pollution throughout Kenya.

Companies like the Water Sector Trust Fund are among the stakeholders with whom we'd like to collaborate (WSTF).The World Bank established the WSTF to help water utilities enhance their "bankability" through technical support and better financial management.
These are the businesses that will support our cause since it will help them advance and attract more people to their cause.

Our solution is to raise awareness that the way to end water pollution in Mombasa is through us. If we as citizens of Mombasa decide to stop using plastics in our homes we are not only cleaning our beaches and reducing a part of the pollution in the ocean we are also clearing out a cause of land pollution. Another way to end water pollution is by helping factories collect their waste water and filter it. We can then use that filtered water in toilets and for growing crops. That way we are not only saving water we are also caring for our environment.

To conclude we’d like to say that “change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek” as once said by Barack Obama. We should start with ourselves to make that change. If we start with our homes and reduce plastic in our homes we can all make a difference.
