Repair Elmont's Water Tower NOW

Repair Elmont's Water Tower NOW
The Issue
Elmont is a suburban bedroom community that serves as the gateway from New York City into greater Long Island. It comprises approximately 4 square miles of beautiful homes and active commerce. Elmont has very successful schools and is a supportive and neighborly community of predominantly Black Americans and generations of Caribbean and Eastern Asian Immigrants. We are a great community with heart.
The one thing that can immediately be seen once entering the town of Elmont is the Water Tower located on Lenox St and Miriam Pkwy. Our water tower has become an eyesore and gives the impression of blight in a community with an average median salary of $100,000.00 per household. The tower is rusted, and has old paint chips falling off of it and leaves the impression that Elmont is a community that is uncared for, and thus diminishing the value of our homes and neighborhood. Communities adjacent to Elmont have towers that appear to be well-maintained and in most cases have the town’s name emblazoned on it, which can be looked upon with community pride.
We understand that there are mandated water treatment service repairs that need to be made. However, according to an article on patch.com entitled, “Millions In State Grants Fund LI Water Improvement Projects,” the Water Authority of Western Nassau County received $4,930,200 as part of the grants that were awarded through the Water Infrastructure Improvement Act.
The Water Authority of Western Nassau County, serves Elmont and parts of Franklin Square. However, the difference in Elmont’s water tower to Franklin Square’s water tower is undeniable. Franklin Square has a painted water tower with no rust and FRANKLIN SQUARE painted across it. Elmont does not.
Waiting three to four years to clean and paint the Elmont Water Tower is unacceptable. We want safe drinking water AND a painted tower that says ELMONT...NOW!
