In an ever divided nation living in the age of social media and mobile devices, our youth are exposed every minute of the day to divisive half truths and pure disinformation coming from adults with agendas.  We believe that it is imperative that we take steps now to equip our future generations with the skills and perspectives necessary to assist them in navigating the over abundance of information at their fingertips.

Our goal is to help construct a nation built on tolerance and empathy.  We still have hope for a nation of people who celebrate our similarities and understand our differences.   We still have hope that our youth can mature with an the understanding that every person is the product of distinctly unique circumstances, often outside of their control, which are instrumental in forming the perspective or lens through which life is experienced.  We still have hope for a nation that embraces the fact that political and philosophical differences are the very fuel of democracy and progress.

In a 1963 speech, John F. Kennedy made famous the aphorism "A rising tide lifts all boats."  On its face, this is a concept that I believe all Americans can get behind.  Where the disagreement exists is how to raise the tide.  The answer to that question will only be found in empathy, understanding and a refusal to treat our fellow citizens as enemies. Unfortunately, our media outlets and partisan politicians have embraced division, demonization and hyperbole as the most effective tools in advancing their agenda.  The fact that media outlets are driven by the pursuit of profits further exacerbates the problem as they understand that the only way to maximize profits is to offer the most dramatic product possible.

The blessing that is our 1st Amendment creates a substantial challenge to addressing these issues from the top down.  In light of that fact, the first step must be educating our youth on how to navigate.  It's imperative that our future generations are taught to see through the divisive rhetoric spun and promoted irresponsibly by those in the spotlight with undue influence.
