Inclusive Primaries

The Issue

House Bill 1063 would allow Washington State 17-year-olds to vote in a primary election if they are 18 years old by the general election. Granting 17-year-olds this right is common sense; because they are going to vote in the general election, it is reasonable—if not necessary—that they have a voice in deciding who will be on the general ballot. This bill not only has my support, but it has the full support of many people across the State, including many of our representatives: most notably Senate Majority Leader Andy Billig and Representative Steve Bergquist. In an age where obstacles are frequent throughout the voter process, Washington is at the forefront of making the democratic process more inclusive. This bill, being complementary to the Access to Democracy Package, will further this mission. Hence, it is in the best interest of the State of Washington, and of the residents thereof, that the hold on this bill be lifted, and that the House of Representatives be permitted to vote on--and hopefully pass--House Bill 1063.
