Why this petition matters

Started by Jennifer Walsh

Washington Post ran an article titled " Gearing up for a Second Act" One former
stay‑at‑home‑mom gets coached on setting up her dog breeding business.

It is wholey irresponsible to run a piece like this, especially during this pandemic. The United States is already faced with a huge burden when it comes to the number of homeless, abandoned and surrendered animals. But the coronavirus pandemic has been fuel for the already burning fire that is animal welfare. People are finding themselves in economic hardships, people are loosing their homes or being evicted, unemployment rate is the highest it has been since the Great Depression and animals are paying the price.

Many people are also looking for new or alternate career paths right now. A career path that will keep them closer to home, make their bubble just a little bit smaller and a little but safer until we have this pandemic under control so introducing this "career path" as a viable option and glorifying it without calling out any of the reasons why this might NOT be a good career path is just plain irresponsible. Approximately 5,500 animals are euthanized in American shelters every DAY. 2.7 MILLION animals per year. 70 MILLION homeless pets in the United States. Breeding is just NOT a viable option as a new career. What we need are rescues, what we need are animal advocates, what we need are grass roots community animal advocacy programs.

If you don't respond to the plea for the animals maybe these facts will resonate with you...To pay for all of this – the impoundment, sheltering, euthanasia and subsequent disposal of homeless animals – U.S. taxpayers shell out between one to two billion dollars annually. One to two BILLION dollars!!!

Please sign this petition and demand that Washington Post amend their "Second Act" article to include the statistics that will inform it's readers about the dark side of animal breeding. Please sign this to ask both Washington Post and Geiko to sponsor an ad, both print and video, highlighting a dog rescue organization to shine a spotlight on the vast industry of animal rescues that exist as a direct result of over breeding and irresponsible breeding.

Thank you
