Library Oversight Committee

Library Oversight Committee
The Issue
Many of the books available at the schools in the Warsaw Community School contain lewd and immoral descriptions. A list of books known to contain inappropriate material has been provided to the administration on Nov. 9th, 2021 by Katrina Lewis. There was no demonstrable follow-up and that brings us to our request.
We feel that a system needs to be put in place for approving books to our public schools' libraries. There exists a loophole in the law that allows for pornographic depictions in schools' libraries. Some of the books contained in the list from Nov. 9th, if read in public are so graphic and immoral, that they would be deemed illegal to read them to minors--yet they are allowed in our school libraries. These books don't belong in a school, as they are not educational.
We, the citizens and parents in the Warsaw School District, ask the board of education to create a book review committee that contains 3 parent volunteers and 3 school employee volunteers, per school/library. These parents will be tasked with reading books that are submitted to be purchased, either for the library or an individual classroom. Only after they have read and approved the requested book, will it be allowed to be purchased by the librarian or teacher. (The same process will be followed for books that are donated to the library or the classroom as well.)
Our approval for books will be based on the absence of profanity, sexuality, illegal activities, and violence. We also require school books to contain educational value. These strict standards are the desires of the community. As part of this new evaluation process, a full audit of the libraries and individual classrooms will need to be conducted.
Future action will be asking the Indiana State Board of Education to adopt the policies outlined above for schools throughout the state. We also will address the American Library Association and demand that Parental Discretion labels be placed on immoral books so that parents can more easily make determinations that suit their family's moral constitution.
Be the light and lead the way by showing the community, IBOE, and the ALA that parents should be aided in protecting their children and their innocence.
