Jail Safety for Staff Inmates and the Community

Jail Safety for Staff Inmates and the Community
The Issue
The institutions of the Federal Bureau of Prisons across the nation are understaffed. The agency has resorted to using "augmentation" to attempt to cover posts within the confines of the prison and curb overtime instead of attacking the staffing issues head on. Augmentation is the process where non-correctional officer staff such as teachers, doctors, nurses and secretaries are reassigned from their official positions and made to work as correctional officers in inmate areas ranging from low security to maximum custody. Those staff do not receive the same training as the correctional officers who specialize in the care, custody and control of federal inmates. This puts inmates and staff both at risk of physical and sexual assaults, loss of or the decline in inmate services, increase in the possibility of inmate escapes into the community and a host of other safety issues.
Specifically at MCC New York, the administrative facility houses inmates of varying security classifications for crimes ranging from fraud to terrorism. The Warden at MCC New York, Esker Tatum, has required all non-officers (teachers, secretaries, cook supervisors, etc.) to not work their official positions three out of their five day work week to work in the capacity of correctional officers. The community which suffered and is still suffering from the effects of the 9/11 attacks can not take a jail that is not being effectively run and can cause additional harm to the community. Some damages that can result from this poor management of the jail, overburdening of the staff and failure to address problems are having to take inmates out into the community to local hospitals increasing their engagement with the public and increasing the possibility of inmate escapes into the community, more staff members being assaulted and having to make use of local hospitals and services, etc.
Please let Warden Tatum know that his management of the Metropolitan Correctional Center will put lives at risk. Lives of inmates, staff and the local community matter. Let Warden Tatum know that placing a bandaid over his staffing issue will not correct the issue. Let him know all lives matter over saving money and as the Warden of a federal prison he is tasked with preserving life and effectively running the Meteopolitan Correctional Center. Tell him to hire more correctional officers and allow non-officers to work their normal positions to continue providing inmates the services they need so they can reintegrate into society with our families and be successful.
