Build a better park
Build a better park
My name is Candace Owens and I’m a resident and mother in our neighbourhood.
As you may be aware there are several basketball nets that go up every spring in our neighbourhood. In recent years , there have been a number of issues with the safety of speeding cars and street play in general. Although it’s fun for local kids it causes issues with parking and garbage trucks as well as general traffic.
We live in a neighbourhood where most of our backyards are the size of postage stamps. Our neighbourhood is also somewhat of an island cut off from the rest of the town due to the busy roads surrounding it. Our children only have the option of moving freely within our neighbourhood and that means either the street or the park.
The small playground that is currently there is wonderful for the much smaller children . However as our neighbourhood kids grow they will need other activities . That is why iam proposing to the town to build either a court or a half court basketball area in our community park.
While Tom Vegh was in office I contacted him regarding putting in a basketball court in our park for the safety and convenience of our children. He had mentioned that several parents in the neighbourhood had contacted him asking if the empty space in the park could be put to better use than it is currently . Due to its location a splash pad was out of the question. But a basketball court was reasonable. He also suggested it could be converted into a rink during winter months by parent volunteers.
Some homeowners that back on the park ,were concerned that the court would infringe on their privacy. However the court would be closer to the playground rather than the fences along the perimeter. It would be adjacent to the playground or on the south side of the pathway.
Since Tom has left office, his replacement, Grace Simon , has been kind enough to take up this issue with me. She’s aware of the speeding car issue due to several complaints by residents on willowick, and agrees the addition would be a great opportunity to keep the kids safe.
If iam going to convince the town to put in the basketball court signatures are required to show support.
Children belong playing in the park where they are safe from speeding cars.
If you agree, I urge you to sign and show your support in building a better park in our neighbourhood
Your children, your neighbours and local drivers will all thank you for it .
