Want to Know Why Women Stay? Support Women’s Economic Empowerment

The Issue

Impeding on Women’s Economic Empowerment Insults Our Divine Intelligence. It’s Time To Level TF Up.

“I don’t want to insult you- but maybe you could push yourself harder and consider collecting recycling and save some money for housing. Maybe do something on the side that’s not related to your business”.

September 13, 2024, Miguel, a Regional  Director of Housing at Mercy House told her, a small business owner living at the shelter to start collecting recycling to make money for her housing.

I’m her. This petition is my response.

I’m calling on all women entrepreneurs, business owners and dreamers to, join me in supporting my work and my petition.

The petition will be presented to Governor Newsom when it reaches 250,000 signatures.

Hashtag makemiguelfamous represents taking a stand against people in positions of authority and influence like Miguel. These are the Individuals who use their role to further oppress women and impede on a women’s economic empowerment.

We will collectively speak out again and again and as many times as it takes. We’ll continue to take action against retaliatory practices against women who report sexual harassment and experience retaliation as well as discrimination as business owners.

My petition is calling on Governor Newsom to taken action!

My Open Letter to Governor Newsom can be read in it’s entirety by clicking the link below.

The well honed skill set of an abuser who controls the finances in a relationship and the leadership of an organisation that controls if she has a roof over her head may be different scenarios, but they are rooted in the same economic abuse tactics and coercive control that many women have experienced in abusive and toxic relationships.

🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪

Are we really still asking why women stay?

Retaliation against women who speak out and report sexual harassment is not new. Threats of being kicked out by a shelter provider for working on building a business is discriminatory and the threats of and the actual eviction to the streets are commonplace in shelters.

Economic liberation and empowerment is non negotiable for women. When we make our own money and build generational wealth we get to choose where we live and to live without fear of retaliation.

The truth of how state and federal funds are allocated is coveted and dismissed by politicians and shelter operators that stand to profit greatly, while presenting as one of the good guys that provide a service to the community.

My petition is calling on Governor Newsom to do the following:

1) Direct an investigation into the homeless shelter provider, Mercy House Living Centers for their failure to investigate my sexual harassment complaint, in addition to their repeated failures to investigate all complaints and all incidences of sexual harassment.

2) Impose penalties and withhold money from funding for the following:

 a) unable to show clear evidence of policy and procedures on how an individual can file sexual harassment complaints,

b) failure to have specific individuals/department trained in conducting interviews and investigations that follow the guidelines of California’s Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) and the Unruh Civil Rights Act, that protect people from housing discrimination.

c) any retaliation against those who speak out and and harassment involving threats of eviction and actual eviction as a form of retaliation.

My work and my petition represent the liberation and economic empowerment of women entrepreneurs and our hard earned right to not have our economic empowerment impeded.

The sexual harassment I experienced at Mercy House is more than what happened to me. It is deeply connected to the ongoing crimes against women and children. As a survivor of childhood sexual assault and domestic violence I recognise that the subtle, yet soulful invasiveness of sexual harassment is tolerated, minimised and dismissed because it is woven into the very fabric of patriarchy and misogyny.

Retaliation and failure to investigate complaints of sexual harassment thrive in industries where there is zero transparency. It’s not difficult to see how we can resolve many of the issues related to homelessness, sexual harassment and women’s right to economic empowerment.

If we want to resolve the issues we have with homelessness, we just have to look at who is profiting.

Without transparency there is no accountability. Corruption breeds best in the dark underbelly of profit and greed.

Thank you for supporting my work and my call for transparency and accountability!

Mercy House’s, Bridges, in Anaheim was one of three shelters that was part of the 2019 ACLU (SoCal) published report over unsafe and unsanitary conditions. This report also included reports of sexual harassment and individuals being threatened with eviction (exit) from the shelter for speaking out.
