Change The Morton High School Dress Code

The Issue

The Morton High School dress code is causing problems for teachers, students, and the families of students. Students are being pulled out of class and having valuable learning time taken away from them because of small infractions, such as an undershirt being black or not wearing an id around their neck. During the 2014-2015 school year, they were more lax and allowed students to wear Morton Spirit Wear along with the khaki or navy blue pants the uniform states is acceptable. Those students bought many spirit wear shirts and now in the 2015-2016 they are not allowed to wear those. Also, they are making the rules for the uniforms even more strict. The shirts have to be white, navy or red, with no variations on the colors (no light blue, maroon, etc.) and khaki and navy blue bottoms. Their undershirts also have to be white, navy, or red. Many families in the School City of Hammond have to buy uniforms for multiple students. The average yearly cost for each student to buy uniforms is $249. Multiply that by multiple students in each household and the costs are detrimental to families of low income. For students to qualify for free/reduced lunch, their families have to make an income of $31,005 or less, and 82.74% of students in the School City of Hammond are on free and reduced lunch. Their families cannot afford to keep buying uniforms every year. Therefore, the School City of Hammond should remove the uniform policy and adhere to a less strict dress code policy.
