Start releasing Star Wars television on DVD and Blu-Ray again
The Issue
Unfortunately, Star Wars Resistance was less popular than the other animated Star Wars shows that came before it, and with the launch of Disney+, at a glance, it seems people who use the service are less likely to buy Blu-Rays of featured shows and movies, and vice versa. Understandably, Disney decided not to release season two of resistance on DVD.
However, time has gone by. The Clone Wars’ breathtakingly beautiful seventh season, brought back largely thanks to fans like me making our voices heard, was immensely popular. It was the most streamed show of 2020 in May. Before D+ had new Star Wars content, Netflix was practically always on top. The Mandalorian broke the internet and was nominated for fifteen Emmys, winning seven. Yet The Mandalorian is two seasons in, and still has no physical releases.
When comparing numbers, don’t compare The Clone Wars season 7 to the dvd release of season 1 of resistance, which was lacking in bonus content. Compare it to seasons as successful as it was that got a quality release. The Mandalorian and Wandavision come up more regularly for me at work than any other streaming shows, and stranger things made tens of millions of dollars with home video releases.
With the success of The Mandalorian and of Marvel’s Wandavision, there’s always a show on Disney+ that everyone is talking about. The way the internet and discourse are, I think the hype combined with spoiler avoidance is a big enough motivator for many to join and keep the service. Ultimately, nowadays, people, especially passionate Star Wars fans, stream and buy for different reasons. Blu-Ray sets like season five of The Clone Wars and three of Rebels, for example, had fantastic bonus features and a great look and feel for collectors.
Disney+‘s The Mandalorian Gallery and YouTube’s Clone Wars Download are great, but I’d compare them to Rebels Recon; icing on the cake. The more bonus features, the merrier. That’s why Target exclusives sell out. So many Star Wars collections feel empty without The Mandalorian, season 7 of The Clone Wars, and season 2 of resistance. Disney, this petition is our way of showing that we would pay you to make us happy by solving this problem. Isn’t making people smile what the mouse loves the most?
