The Issue

As a child, representation for blackness in coming of age cinema was limited and often stereotypical. From dolls, cartoons, and other tokens of adolescence. I and other black children were often reminded that the world sometimes looked at us as an afterthought. With few memories of black things designed solely for us, we held on tight to things that were. In an effort to share memories like that with the children in my life I went to Disney Plus searching for the movie that made me feel seen and brought me so much joy. I was very disheartened to see Disney Plus did not have the black version of Pollyanna known as "Polly". Pollyanna was there but OUR Polly wasn't.
Polly is the epitome of black excellence from the front to behind the camera. Debbie Allen masterly directs and choreographs this musical highlighting the talents of this gifted black ensemble. Phylicia Rashad and Keshia Knight Pulliam are perfectly cast as Aunt and niece. The scenes and songs are forever engraved in our hearts. It highlights a thriving black community and the bravery and warmness of a little orphan girl named Polly and the lives she touches by simply being black girl magic. It would be a shame not to have this amazing piece of black cinema on your platform to show the world. We should not be reduced to watching grainy copies on youtube and old VHS's. We deserve the same nostalgic representation. Please put Polly on Disney plus for the world to see the magic of us and our storytelling.
Thank you.

P.S We want the sequel too❤️
