Walpole Public Schools must investigate reports of racial bias and train it's staff better
The Issue
In the recent events for calls of racial justice across America, a movement here in our town of Walpole, Massachusetts is growing as well. Students and young people of color have gone on social media to say their stories of racism and bias that we have faced in our schools and by the police.
When I shared my story of incidents with a teacher my freshman year online, my fellow peers responded to me, saying how they have had similar experiences, and with some gaining the courage to share their stories as well. So far, a handful of my peers have come out, and many more will share theirs as well. This got me thinking; so many of our students and young adults have had interactions with teachers, staff, the officers, as well as other students too. Yet, how come our school committee has failed to address these issues? How come we still do not have a way for students to write in and report these abuses, with all reports being taking seriously and investigated to the full extent?
We need students to feel safe at school, in an environment where they can learn and be happy. This includes our staff to be held accountable for all counts of abuse and bias. And as tax-payers, parents and adults in Walpole deserve to know that their money is being spent towards an education system that fosters growth and success.
It's time Walpole Public Schools and the town realize that the times have changed. Students of color are tired of being subjected to racial bias. I propose to the committee that a functioning department is set up that handles reports of abuse. Instances of racism in WHS, or any of the schools in our town should be investigated to the fullest, and staff held accountable. Staff who have a history of discrimination or bias should be talked to and disciplined. Racial bias training should be mandatory for all staff. Students should freely express their stories without facing further consequences.
We are tired of hearing the same names pop up in these stories. Racism, whether it's subtle or obvious, is still morally wrong. Us students, our parents, and the people of Walpole demand reform. We will not stop. We will continue to fight.
