Increase Bilingual Walmart Pharmacy Workers Pay to Incentivize Diversity & Inclusivity

The Issue

Walmart Pharmacy is a great place to work and has admirable Standard Operating Procedures to ensure patient safety and maximize positive health outcome. In comparison to other major chain pharmacies, Walmart Pharmacy has made great strides in Opioid Stewardship, mandatory pharmacy closures in the absence of a pharmacist, and hiring full time employees (healthcare, 401k benefits, etc.) over part-timers. This petition request that this company continue to take a step further in the direction of welcoming more inclusivity in the workplace by incentivizing multilingual workers with a few extra cents to their paychecks.

Background:

  • Walmart Pharmacy requires multilingual pharmacy workers to pass a language test before workers are allowed to use it for patient care services (e.g., translation).
  • Upon passing the comprehensive language test, pharmacy workers are rewarded with helping those with a language barrier but are more burdened and without compensation.
  • Pharmacy workers have expressed how they feel taken advantaged of, especially if they are the Spanish-speaker in a pharmacy located in predominately Spanish-speaking community. Thus, some feel burdened, rather than celebrated, for knowing another language.

Providing a few extra cents would push hesitant pharmacy workers who are on the fence to review and embrace their language skills. This celebrates and promotes culture and diversity at home, in the workplace and provides for a better patient care experience in the community at-large.
