Change Walmart Alcohol sales policy and/or the way it's enforced.

The Issue

Brian Nick, director of national media relations for the chain said, "The company's ONLY policy-for booze and cigarettes- is to check the ID of the person MAKING the purchase. In the case of alcohol, policy requires that workers card BUYERS who don't look at least 40 years old." My local Wal-Mart, in Mountain Home ID, says it's Wal-Mart policy is that the cashier, at their discretion, can deny you the purchase of alcohol if the persons with you do not have their ID and look under 40. This includes your baby, teenager, spouse, siblings, parents or friend. On a typical Thursday afternoon I needed to pick up a few things, groceries included, so I of course, chose Wal-Mart. Drug my husband along with me because I didn't want to go alone. We were in the beer section so I decided to get him a 12 pack of beer for the weekend, since we were already there. I went to the checkout line, my husband to the restroom. He came back, sat on the bench in front of the lane I was in. To my surprise when the cashier scanned the beer, she asked to see both our ID's. Now, I am 30. I showed her my MILITARY DEPENDENT ID. My husband, with grey hair looks up and says, why mine? I asked her, why do you need to see his? I am the purchaser and I showed valid ID. She says he looks under 40! To my knowledge, the legal age to buy alcohol in this country is 21. Not 40. The managers agree with her. If you are buying alcohol and have someone who LOOKS under 40 with you, the cashier at their own discretion, can deny your purchase. The lady and her teen daughter behind me looked baffled! I asked the cashier if she would deny that lady a purchase of alcohol bc her daughter doesn't have an ID. She said YES, SHE WOULD! The lady was just as furious as I was. The Manager then said, he would let the lady with her daughter buy the alcohol. I then asked, then why not allow me, with my 36 yr old HUSBAND WHO IS ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY? He then says, OH he really isn't selling it to me now!! HE not only was discriminatory but he was disrespectful. The policy needs to change! The way my husband and I were treated is inexcusable! The police officer that came said this same Walmart did this to him and his wife. Over a $5 bottle of wine! They need to change their policy! It shouldn't matter who goes to Walmart with you. If you are over 21 and show a VALID ID, that's all that should matter! People are being denied the purchase of alcohol because their BABY is with them. Their Mother! This is OUTRAGEOUS! Share this petition and let's make them change this ridiculous policy and teach their cashiers and Managers how to use their discretion better!
