Shut Down Blend Raleigh

The Issue

Blend Raleigh is part of a larger retail-style MLM scam that is popping up near colleges in both Raleigh and Wilmington. Blend is marketed as a "trendy" shake and tea shop, but their main ingredients are Herbalife products, a notorious MLM scheme. Not only is Herbalife NOT FDA approved, but it is also linked to liver failure, as well as containing laxatives (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK548447/ Beyond the scam of this "business" lies a bigger issue, its dangerous contribution to eating disorder culture. As you enter Blend as a first-time customer, the person behind the counter (often the owner) asks you to fill out a sheet with your contact info as well as your health goals seemingly focusing heavily on weight loss. They claim that juice and a smoothie combo (for $14) is a meal with just 300 calories... The shakes are made using ice, syrups, and Herbalife products, mainly just containing carbs and protein byproduct. To make things worse, this Hillsborough location is offering a whole dollar off if you tag them on social media. The pressure of buying the combo and tagging them spreads their dangerous ploy. Having a big social media presence and being so close to a college (as well as active with many sororities) allows Blend to spread their toxic view of food to many impressionable college students. Approximately 20% of all college students struggle with an eating disorder, a percentage that will only continue to rise at NC State if Blend's Hillsborough Street location remains open.
