Call for an Independent Investigation of Attorney General Bill Sorrell

The Issue

Recently, several media outlets and a formal complaint have identified possible campaign finance violations by Vermont's Attorney General Bill Sorrell. Furthermore, it appears that Mr. Sorrell may have awarded lucrative state contracts to out-of-state law firms who contributed to his re-election campaigns.

Regardless of whether or not Mr. Sorrell has broken the law, there seems to be enough evidence to support an investigation, if only to put to rest claims of wrongdoing by the Attorney General. Unfortunately, Mr. Sorrell has declined to call for an independent investigation into his own activities. This is where our democratic system of checks and balances shows a vulnerability: a single person--the Attorney General--can decide whether he himself should be investigated.

Since Mr. Sorrell has declined to open an investigation into these matters and Governor Shumlin seems unlikely to do so, it is within the powers of each of you--the fourteen Vermont State's Attorneys--to call for an investigation on behalf of the residents of Vermont.
