Vow to Overcome Obstacles to Peace in American Politics
The Issue
I acknowledge the following Obstacles to Peace facing America's political parties:
- Political parties often emphasize division and conflict, appealing to fears of losing status or power. This can create a sense of “death” to one’s own ideals and values when faced with opposing viewpoints.
2. There can be an attraction to blaming the “other side” for societal problems, which distracts from addressing underlying issues. This blame reinforces feelings of guilt and separation rather than fostering constructive dialogue.
3. Parties may struggle with maintaining integrity, as the ego’s influence can lead to corruption of their initial principles for personal or political gain. This corruption manifests in dishonesty or compromised values.
4. The body of the political party (its structure and members) can be used to serve ego-driven purposes rather than a genuine commitment to the common good.
5. There can be a fear of confronting uncomfortable truths or embracing necessary changes. This fear prevents parties from fully engaging with or accepting the broader, more inclusive truth that might conflict with their current narratives.
6. Fear of losing identity or control can cause resistance to unity or compromise, making it difficult to work across party lines for the common good.
7. Parties may fear genuine connection and vulnerability that comes from true understanding and empathy. This fear can lead to maintaining superficial or adversarial relationships rather than seeking deeper, constructive dialogues.
8. The fear of losing perceived power or position can prevent parties from embracing love and collaboration, leading to entrenched positions and continued conflict.
I will address my personal political biases through healthy shifts in thinking:
- I Understand that alignment with a political party can be a form of dedication to a particular idea or identity. I acknowledge that this alignment may involve a bias that influences how I perceive information and make decisions.
2. I will reflect on how my political alignment might stem from fear—fear of change, fear of the unknown, or fear of losing a perceived sense of security. I will ask myself if this fear is affecting my judgments and interactions with others.
3. I notice the appeal my party alignment holds for me, such as a sense of belonging or validation. I recognize that this attraction may prevent me from seeing other perspectives objectively.
4. I will practice forgiveness towards myself and others for any judgments or biases that have been formed. I understand that my political alignment is not inherently wrong but that rigid adherence can be a form of separation. I will embrace a mindset of love and understanding rather than division.
5. I will invite my inner guide to help me see beyond party lines and biases. This involves asking for guidance to view others and their perspectives with compassion and openness.
6. I will shift my focus from separation to unity. Recognizing that, ultimately, everyone is seeking the same goals of peace, security, and well-being. I will look for common ground and shared values rather than emphasizing differences.
7. I understand that the journey beyond political biases is part of a broader quest for truth and unity. By doing this, I align with the purpose of creating a more inclusive and harmonious society.
I vow to overcome party alignments and make real change, by taking the following steps:
- I vow to learn about the policies, values, and platforms of candidates and parties beyond the ones my party aligns with. I understand different perspectives helps in making more informed decisions.
- I vow to participate in conversations with individuals from different political backgrounds. Open dialogue can challenge assumptions and broaden understanding.
- I vow to advocate for and support candidates and initiatives that promote bipartisan solutions and collaboration across party lines.
- I vow to focus on candidates whose policies align with my personal values and the common good rather than strictly adhering to party lines.
- I vow to support reforms that make the political system more inclusive and representative, such as ranked-choice voting or independent redistricting.
- I vow to begin engaging in local politics and community initiatives, where individual contributions can have a more direct impact on change.
By vowing to take these steps, I can help bridge divides and promote more effective and collaborative governance. I will work towards overcoming the obstacles to peace and fostering a more constructive and unified political environment.
