The City of St Pete must implement solutions to flooding, sea-level rise, storm surge in the event of a major hurricane, sinkholes, and tornadoes. In the event of a disaster, the current strategies such as evacuations do not prevail in any regard to decrease risk relative to an individual's or business' property or even one's capital and assets. The Tampa Bay Times argues our region is the most vulnerable to storm surge and could even be implied to rises in sea-level caused by global warming. If St Petersburg were to be eradicated by a major hurricane (Category 3 or above) the potential losses could mount upwards of $175 billion ultimately forcing the burden onto homeowners and residents via rebuilding or relocation efforts. The Dalai Lama, an honored environmental advocate and Noble Peace Prize winner, asserts in Moral Ground that we share a sense of universal responsibility for both mankind and nature. Therefore, "if people begin to act with genuine compassion for everyone, we can still protect each other and the natural environment" The ongoing climate crises  and increased catastrophic occurrences is a wake up call to cut our carbon emissions and restore our natural protection forces such as mangroves, salt marsh wetlands, seagrass coverage, and coastal dunes. We must innovate our infrastructure to decrease potential losses via support of stormwater pumps, more water absorbent roadways, sidewalks, and parking lots using Topmix Permeable, as well as constructing flood gates. Why should we care you may ask? Well implementing these solutions would protect our livelihoods and others including the property and city in which we reside. If we do not change our compassion for this issue we could face consequences beyond our control and uproot our lives as we know them. The signatures provided will be utilized in convincing the municipality and county that residents want proper protection via the solutions mentioned above and proper risks assessment.
