Voters Call Veto on Missouri’s Gerrymandered Congressional Map. Stand With Them.

The Issue

Missourians have a constitutional right to veto laws they believe are unfair — and right now, they’re using it to reject a gerrymandered congressional map that silences their voice and splits apart Black communities in Kansas City.

But instead of respecting that right, Missouri Republican officials are suing to block the “people’s veto.”

Attorney General Catherine Hanaway — appointed just weeks before the map was rushed into law — has filed a lawsuit on behalf of the state to stop voters from overturning the legislature’s map, which is designed to protect partisan power, not represent real communities.

We, the undersigned, stand with People Not Politicians Missouri, the grassroots coalition leading the veto effort. We demand that:

  • Missouri officials immediately drop their lawsuit attempting to block the people’s veto
  • The Secretary of State accept all valid referendum signatures gathered in good faith
  • The courts uphold Missourians’ constitutional right to reject laws through the referendum process

The Missouri Constitution is clear: “The people…reserve power to approve or reject by referendum any act of the general assembly.”

This is not about partisanship — it’s about protecting democracy.

The new map, passed without meaningful public input, splits Kansas City’s Black voters across multiple GOP districts, weakening their political power and violating the basic principle of fair representation.

Now, state leaders are trying to block a citizen-led referendum using false claims, procedural tricks, and intimidation tactics — all to prevent voters from having the final say.

But this is our state, and these are our elections.

We believe voters should choose their representatives — not the other way around.

Sign this petition to demand Missouri officials stop trying to silence voters and let the people decide. Let the referendum proceed. Let democracy work.
