The Issue

On March 11, 2024, congress passed a bill which would effectively force DC to cut their budget by one billion dollars, which includes cuts in healthcare, the police department, and most importantly, the funding given to non profit organizations. This bill was met with great upheaval and distress, and eventually Senate drafted another bill, called the District of Columbia Local Funds Act, to reverse these budget cuts. Though it passed in the Senate, the House of Representatives is yet to vote on this bill, causing internal turmoil within the DC government.

This bill specifically impacts nonprofits, as the funding within the DC budget is often allocated to these organizations. In addition, it heavily targets nonprofits which work with victims of domestic violence, as they need to provide victims with healthcare and protection.

Right now, these budget cuts are throwing DC and DC's nonprofits into a crisis which would have an immense negative impact the livelihood of citizens and the city as a whole. We ask that you sign this petition and help to preserve the budget of DC to ensure the protection of victims of domestic violence and the longevity of the nonprofits that support them.
