The Issue

Growing up, the summer vacation has been a crucial part of student life. It offers the much-needed break from the academic grind, a chance for personal growth, exploration, and relaxation. This sacred time ensures that students can return to classes rejuvenated and ready to learn. However, Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) is considering a year-round school calendar, which puts this tradition at risk. This dramatic change is feared by many, including teachers and myself, as it seems to disregard students' mental well-being entirely. I firmly believe that the school board members who voted in favor of a year-round calendar have misunderstood the implications. They might believe that this change will benefit students and families, but their decisions reflect a lack of empathy towards the stress that students face throughout the year. With the existing academic pressures, the absence of a summer break might make education an unending source of stress for the student body. The concept of a year-round calendar is intended to reduce learning loss by having shorter breaks throughout the year. However, studies have shown that shorter, frequent breaks might not effectively combat the learning gap, especially compared to the quality downtime that a long summer break affords. For instance, an article from Education Week cites that students who have sufficient breaks between learning periods show improved performance and better mental health. In addition, a summer break allows students to engage in enriching activities that improve social skills and emotional health, which cannot be replicated by sporadic, short breaks. In considering what's best for our school community, we should reflect on what message we are sending when we prioritize academic routines over personal development and mental health. Depriving students of an extended break can lead to burnout, increased stress, and diminished enthusiasm for learning. This is a call to action for parents, students, educators, and community members to join me in opposing the year-round calendar. Let's stand together to voice our concerns about the potential negative impact on students' mental health and their overall educational experience. If we want to truly support our students and help them succeed, we must preserve their right to a relaxing, school work free summer break. I urge you to sign this petition to ensure that the students of LCPS have a balanced and nurturing educational environment.
