The Issue

We recognize that all individuals are capable of making mistakes, yet those mistakes should not define their potential for growth, redemption, and positive contribution to society. We believe in the power of learning from past errors and moving forward with the guidance and support of positive influences, including relationships that inspire personal transformation and collective betterment.

I, along with countless others, find myself on probation, navigating the complexities of reintegration into society while striving for personal growth and renewal. Despite the challenges, I have found love and support with someone who, though incarcerated, embodies the hope and possibility of a brighter future.

Our relationship transcends the boundaries of our pasts, as we met after our encounters with the criminal justice system. We have never engaged in wrongdoing together. Instead, our conversations, though monitored and recorded, are focused on mutual encouragement, support, and the shared aspiration for a better tomorrow.

The impact of this connection cannot be overstated. Through her unwavering support and encouragement, I have achieved milestones I once deemed unattainable. Graduating from an inpatient rehab facility and excelling academically in college are testament to the transformative power of love, support, and the shared commitment to personal and collective betterment.

We believe that the ultimate goal of the justice system, whether through incarceration, probation, or parole, should be to inspire individuals to strive for personal growth, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society. Our petition calls for a reconsideration of policies that restrict communication between individuals on probation and those who are incarcerated.

We advocate for a case-by-case approach, where individuals can demonstrate their commitment to positive change and rehabilitation through meaningful connections that foster personal growth and accountability. These connections, rooted in mutual respect and shared aspiration for a brighter future, are essential components of successful reintegration and societal healing.

Therefore, we urge lawmakers, policymakers, and stakeholders within the criminal justice system to recognize the transformative potential of positive connections and to support policies that enable individuals to maintain relationships that inspire growth, renewal, and collective betterment.

Thank you for your attention and support.
