The Issue

We are starting this petition in hopes of creating a community focused on supporting students, parents, staff, teachers and administrators to have a shared goal in support and encouragement to provide a hopeful, healthy environment for all. To save even one child during this process will be considered a victory.

As you may know, Roman Watson, a student of the L’Anse Creuse School System, made the devastating decision to end his own life in direct connection from enduring bullying at school. He told his teachers, and office staff, but there was direct failure to notify his family or to correct the behavior from the aggressors. Nobody was notified, until it was too late.

We want the school system to rise up for his blatant cry for help. We want a “see something, say something” policy in effect immediately. Most importantly, we want Roman's voice heard. It may be too late to save him, but we have an obligation to each and every other student. Parents need to be informed if their child has been subjected to a threatening situation while in the school’s care. Without exception. The aggressors need to receive counsel immediately to understand bullying will not be tolerated.

We feel the school system should respond by increasing mental health awareness with counseling professionals available to each and every student, regardless of their IEP or consideration of “special needs”.  No child should feel that they don't have someone who will listen to understand them; Beyond that, communication and compromise between students, and staff, to offer lasting solutions that will address the problem. Increasing counseling staff to ensure the children’s voices are heard, is a must. No child should be told “just stay away from them “ or to “just ignore them.”

Bullying is an ongoing problem that needs to be fought head on to ensure the well-being of our future. Bullying is a serious offense, and needs to be treated as such.

We appreciate your support in signing this petition.

We urge our Senator, Darrin Camilleri, to listen to Roman’s cry for help and legislate change within the school systems of his district!
