The Issue

*Watch the annoying lights in action!*

Did you know that Virginia Tech does not include Math Emporium's energy consumption as part of their energy reports?

Math Emporium at Virginia Tech has approximately 360 lights and 537 iMacs operating at all times. Even when the facility is closed to students and other consumers, the facility never turns off their lights and their computers.

This is problematic because Virginia Tech is considered a "gold-star" institution by the Star program. It becomes deceiving to the public when the school advertises itself as a "gold-star" energy saving school, when the school does not even include one of their biggest facilities as part of their own energy consumption. Furthermore, the school is not taking any measures to make a change in order to save lots of energy.

We already know that more than 40% of the energy consumption in buildings are from light usage. If Virginia Tech claims to be a "gold-star" energy saving school, isn't it their duty to make necessary but easy changes to save immense amount of energy?

By signing this petition, you are asking Virginia Tech's Math Emporium to change...

1. its extremely inefficient fluorescent lights to LED lights, and
2. its "never-turn-off-anything" policy.
