Town of Micanopy: Listen to its citizens and stop the median project before it's too late

The Issue

The citizens of the Town of Micanopy reject the plan for the medians- situated in the middle of a designated National Historic District- on the grounds that the citizen's board, known as the Planning and Historic Preservation Board, did not approve to make changes to the medians.

The citizens request that all activity be haulted on said medians until the issue can be discussed further in the next town meeting on February 14th, 2017 at 6:30pm.

Furthermore, the citizens request that the comission be held responsible for the unprofessional actions made on the site, i.e. choosing to "regrettably override" the planning and historic preservation board's commentary against the removal of two cedar trees and the pouring of concrete slabs for benches and light posts that do not fit the historic facade of the town of Micanopy - A project that, in Mayor Virginia Mance's own words was planned and executed by the Public Works crew "despite a lack of professional drawings."

To make matters worse, the median project was funded with grant money not intended for cutting down trees and pouring concrete - leftover grant money from Wild Spaces Public Places was meant "to protect water quality, wildlife habitat and fund improvements to recreation facilities," according to the WSPP official website.

Let's align our efforts to keep the unique, historic charm of downtown Micanopy safe from quick decisions that are unplanned, unprofessionally thought out, and not befitting of the town's historic character.
