Expedite The Replacement of The Robert O. Norris Bridge in Lancaster County, Virginia

The Issue

The Robert O. Norris Bridge is a truss bridge that spans the Rappahannock River between Lancaster County and Middlesex County in Virginia. It serves as the crossing for State Route 3 over the river. It was opened on August 30, 1957 which means this bridge is 63 years old. VDOT states the Norris Bridge was designed with a life span of 75 years. More than 8,000 vehicles cross the narrow two-lane bridge each day and many communities are concerned that the bridge is no longer safe for daily transportation and no longer safe to accommodate more than 8,000 vehicles per day. There are many testimonies that The Norris Bridge is a public safety hazard and it is only a matter of time before the entire bridge collapses putting those who are forced to cross it on a daily basis lives at risk. In April, 2016, a 44-foot section of the two mile bridge was repaired after parts of the concrete cracked, crumbled and the structure buckled.

All local residents and community leaders are demanding an immediate investigation on The Norris Bridge. Local communities are aware that this bridge will earn less than a four which will make it structurally deficient. We can not put a price tag on a life or several lives.
