Vineyard Hills Homeowners Association's Overreach on Lawn Maintenance in Fremont, CA
Vineyard Hills Homeowners Association's Overreach on Lawn Maintenance in Fremont, CA
The Issue
We are residents of Vineyard Hills Homeowners Associatoin, Fremont, California, juggling between our work, business travels, family, and the responsibility to maintain our front lawn as per the strict guidelines set by our Homeowners Association (HoA). The HoA insists on maintaining lush green lawns without weeds which demands excessive water usage and time. This is not only environmentally unfriendly but also imposes financial burdens and logistical challenges for families like ours.
Despite these stringent rules for individual homeowners, it has come to our attention that the HoA is failing in its duty to maintain common areas. We have observed strangers walking from Mission Blvd to the Vineyard Hills community multiple times during day time and night time as there is no vegetation or trees which allows easy passage. This is threating safety of our kids and family. As you all know there has been massive vandalism of our pool area which has destroyed community property. These kind of safety issues will greatly impact the property values of our homes. This clearly articulates that HoA priorities are misplaced. This disparity in enforcement raises questions about fairness and accountability.
California has been grappling with water scarcity issues for years now. According to a report by the Public Policy Institute of California, nearly 30% of total urban water use goes towards landscape irrigation. By forcing homeowners to keep their lawns green throughout the year, we are contributing significantly towards this wastage.
We propose that the HoA should allow residents to opt for environmentally friendly drought-resistant landscaping options which are more sustainable. Additionally, there needs to be more flexibility with deadlines and fines related to lawn maintenance considering personal circumstances such as working, traveling, taking care of family, and of course living life. Each individual wants thier life and family to be better and everyone works hard to achieve that. There is no point of HoA creating additional stress to the community by forcing them to spend extensive amount of money (some lawn modifications can cost up to $15,000+ based on the quotes from lanscaping companies) on lawns as per their schedule. Families need to plan these activities across other financial and personal commitments that they have. It should not be a decision between maintaining a lawn vs living life.
We want our community to be inclusive and compassionate to other ideas and let our community members to lead a productive life. This is the 21st century and we need to understand the value of precious water.
We urge all residents facing similar issues in our community who believe in fair treatment and environmental sustainability to sign this petition. Let us hold our Homeowners Associations accountable while promoting responsible use of resources within our communities.
