Why this petition matters

Victor A. Herrera is a 30-year-old man from Yakima, WA who has been incarcerated for 10+ years. He was first sentenced at the age of 19 with 1st degree assault and a gun enhancement charge. Victor had a tough upbringing like many other teenagers in the area. Yakima was filled with gang affiliated members and violence who were hard to say no to. Victor was raised by a single mother who came to this country to give her son and daughter a better life, because of this she worked two jobs and couldn't always be there for her children. Victor eventually ended up being involved in a gang which was the start to his incarceration. His family and friends have suffered a tremendous amount since his incarceration. Throughout the years he has worked extremely hard to reconcile his relationship with his family and friends. Starting off with setting himself up for his release. He has received multiple certificates that are proof of his dedication to a better life and his education. He has seen his time in prison as a second opportunity, one that not many get. He now is incarcerated at airway heights correctional facility and works as a firefighter helping put out fires all throughout the state of Washington. Victor has not only focused on himself but his community as well. He often donates to local organizations to help the prevention of gangs in the Yakima County. He aims to help the very own system that failed him years ago. Victor has an excellent support system, and the release of this young man would not only fill the aching hearts of his family and friends, but it would also be an asset to society.
