The Issue

Introduction:

We, the undersigned, petition for the reduction of veterinary fees and comprehensive policy reform aimed at improving accessibility to essential veterinary services for pets and their owners. The current high cost of veterinary care creates barriers for many individuals and families, leading to difficult decisions regarding their pets' health and well-being.

Background:

Veterinary care is essential to responsible pet ownership, ensuring our beloved animal companions’ health, happiness, and longevity. However, the escalating costs of veterinary services have placed undue financial strain on pet owners, often resulting in delayed or inadequate care and, in some cases, the surrender or abandonment of pets due to an inability to afford necessary treatment.

Statement of Need:

Affordability: Many pet owners struggle to afford the cost of routine veterinary care, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and emergency treatments, leading to compromised health outcomes for their pets.
Preventative Care: Access to preventative veterinary services is crucial for preventing illnesses and reducing the need for expensive treatments down the line. However, high costs deter many pet owners from seeking routine check-ups and vaccinations for their pets.

Economic Impact:

The economic burden of veterinary expenses disproportionately affects low-income individuals and families, exacerbating financial inequality and contributing to pet health disparities.

Ethical Considerations:

No pet should suffer due to financial constraints, and no owner should be forced to choose between their financial stability and their pet's health and well-being.

Petition Goals:

Reduce Veterinary Fees: We call for measures to reduce the overall cost of veterinary services, including consultations, procedures, medications, and emergency care, making essential veterinary care more accessible to all pet owners.

Subsidised Services:

Advocate for government subsidies or financial assistance programs to help low-income pet owners access veterinary care for their pets.
Education and Awareness: Promote public education initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of preventative veterinary care and available resources for pet owners.

Transparency and Accountability:

Call for greater transparency in veterinary pricing and billing practices, ensuring that pet owners understand the costs associated with their pet's care and have access to itemised invoices.

Legislative Reform:

Advocate for local and countywide policy changes to address the root causes of veterinary cost inflation and improve access to affordable veterinary care for all pets.

Conclusion:

Every pet deserves access to quality veterinary care, regardless of their owner's financial situation. By signing this petition, we stand together in urging policymakers, veterinary professionals, and community stakeholders to prioritise the welfare of animals by reducing veterinary fees and implementing comprehensive policy reforms that ensure equitable access to essential veterinary services for all pets and their owners.

Personal testimony:

My Boxer is 4.6yrs old - diagnosed with Atopic Dermatitis at nine months old

Like many others in the UK, I am a pet owner whose exorbitant veterinary fees have been financially and emotionally strained. Last year alone, I paid £4,000 in vet fees. This year, the insurance cost has risen to £1,700 PA. On top of this expense, I spend £1,200 annually on raw food and more allergy-safe treats, vet prescription fees and online medication for my Boxer, who has suffered from unresolved skin issues most of her life. Environmentally challenged!

Special diets, hypoallergenic food, bedding, Cytopoint monthly injections for skin (that I now do to save a vet consultation fee), she is prescribed, Apoquel, antihistamines for skin, Chlorexyderm topical anti-bac foam, Isaderm lotion, Easotic for ears, Cortavance spray for skin, Aurizon for ears, Allerderm vitamins, Omega 3 and salmon coconut oil and BarF vitamins for raw food, oatmeal shampoos.

This situation is not unique to me but affects countless pet owners across the country who are left feeling helpless and financially drained while caring for their pets' health needs. The current system forces us to pay hefty sums for medications online.

We urgently need a change in legislation that will regulate veterinary fees, ensuring they are fair and affordable.

In addition to regulating fees, establishing an insurance ombudsman specifically dealing with vets' fees would provide much-needed oversight into this issue. This will ensure that pet owners have recourse if they believe they have been unfairly charged or their insurance company refuses to cover necessary treatments.

Our love for our pets should not be exploited by unregulated costs that burden us financially. We call on legal reforms to take action now – regulate veterinary fees, ensuring fairness and affordability!
