The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is a government department in the United Kingdom. Established in June 2001, DEFRA is responsible for the implementation of government policy in areas related to the natural environment, food production, and rural affairs. Duties undertaken by this department include policy and regulations development to protect the environment, fostering sustainable agriculture and fisheries, managing risks from animal and plant diseases, and promoting animal welfare. DEFRA also undertakes research and provides scientific advice to inform its policy-making process.
