Vet Techs Deserve the Same Pay as RNs

Vet Techs Deserve the Same Pay as RNs
The Issue
I absolutely love what I do as a veterinary technician. I love that I get the opportunity to positively impact the lives of countless animals and their caretakers. However, despite the vital work we perform, the financial realities are disheartening.
Vet techs play an essential role in animal healthcare, carrying out responsibilities that mirror those of registered nurses (RNs) in human medicine. We administer medications, prepare animals for surgery, perform diagnostic tests, and provide critical care, among many other tasks. Despite these responsibilities, our compensation is not reflective of the work we do. On average, veterinary technicians are paid approximately half of what RNs earn, even though the nature of our work demands similar, if not superior, skills and expertise.
This disparity in pay is not only unfair but also unsustainable. The financial strain forces talented and passionate individuals, who wish to continue making a difference for animals, to make difficult choices. Many are compelled to leave the field in search of better-paying opportunities, depriving the veterinary world of skilled and passionate professionals.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for veterinary technologists and technicians in 2020 was just $36,260, whereas registered nurses had a median annual income of $75,330. Such figures highlight the massive pay gap that urgently needs to be addressed.
We must acknowledge the indispensable work of vet techs and seek to establish parity in compensation. Ensuring fair compensation would not only help retain skilled technicians but also attract new talents into the field, ultimately improving the quality of care provided to animals.
Join me in urging lawmakers, veterinary associations, and employers to take action in leveling the pay between veterinary technicians and registered nurses. Acknowledge the critical work we perform and ensure we can continue our careers without financial hardship. Sign this petition to support equal pay for veterinary technicians and help bring about the change that is long overdue.
