Deveandre Johnson started this petition to Vanderbilt University Staff and Administration

With the start of this new semester, the biggest change (other than the new COVID-19 rules) was the lack of a fall break implemented in our schedule. The decision by administration not to have a fall break this year is understandable because of the possible spreading of COVID-19 due to travel outside of the Nashville area and it is appreciated that the administration is concerned about the overall physical health of our campus community. However, the problem with not having a fall break is that students are expected to work from Aug 24 - Nov 20, which is a total of 65 days (not including weekends) without a break.

During a normal year without the global pandemic, switch to mostly online classes, presidential election, heightened racial problems in the U.S, and increase of natural disasters (i.e. fires, hurricanes, etc) it is tiring to do the marathon of highly academic work that Vanderbilt is known for. Therefore, when you factor in these different variables the marathon becomes that much longer and that much harder. Each of these factors mentioned adds an additional layer of stress to students and although our physical health is being protected and taken care of, our mental health is rapidly declining.

All we ask as students is that administration and staff implement a day or two of no classes and no extra work scheduled so that students have time to process, rest, relax, or whatever they need to do to prevent burnout. I guarantee that if this marathon continues the way it is, professors will see a decline in the effort put into assignments, class attendance, and overall participation, if they have not witnessed so already.

We as Vanderbilt students want to produce work to the best of our ability, and during a normal year that requires hard work and long days and for this year it requires even more which will be impossible to maintain without some days of rest.
