With the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the abrupt transition to deliver education through distance learning, students and their families from all communities have been forced to reacclimate to unprecedented circumstances. Households have lost their primary source of income, family members with underlying medical conditions have been separated, and yet students must concurrently maintain their academic performance remotely while situating a new lifestyle prioritizing crucial health precautions amidst this global crisis.

Particularly, this is affecting students at Vanden High School disproportionately, whose grades are essential for their future university enrollments. During times that should undividedly be spent with close ones most vulnerable, students continue to compete for letter grades. The ongoing approach of distance learning poorly caters to the vast array of conditions and responsibilities each individual student faces at home with their family. Let alone, this assumes that students can deliver the same academic performance amidst a time where families suffer the economic and emotional burdens of this pandemic. Almost all major universities across the country and in California have changed their grading from letter grade to Pass/No Pass for the Spring Semester of 2020. These universities include, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Stanford, Harvard, Yale etc. This measure was taken to reduce the ramifications of losing vital resources for academic success and alleviate the stress on students. This option should not be exempt for high school students, and even middle school students during these uncertain times.

Therefore, we are calling on the Board of Trustees and Superintendent of Travis Unified School District and the Principal of Vanden High School to implement a Pass/ No Pass grading system for the Spring Semester of 2020, or alternatively a Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory grading system for all classes. This would equate to any student achieving above a C- to pass their class. This system will allow the least amount of stress on students and educators, and level the playing field for those that are being disproportionately affected during this pandemic.

We hope that the administration at Travis Unified School District, including Superintendent Pam Conklin, Principal Kristen Shields and the counselors of Vanden High School, consider taking this action in a timely manner for the health and well-being of our students.
