We're now up to 73 signatures and growing. Thank you for your support. Yesterday I emailed the petition to the Mayor and Council, as well as the Park Board, Vancouver Coastal Health and the city Liquor Control Board, along with a complaint regarding the July 18 Queen of Diamonds incidents. Park Board Chair John Coupar responded that he forwarded the email to staff. As a result, I heard back shortly after from City Manager Penny Ballem who that she'll be looking into this today. Also, Deputy Mayor Andrea Reimer has been in touch and she's also investigating. Today I spoke to a co-ordinator at the Liquor Licence Branch who told me they have been following up on my complaints, starting with the one from July 1st involving the Magic Spirit. They met with that owner yesterday and he has agreed the music was too loud, and will be keeping it down. I had spoken to him after that incident and he was very apologetic. Now the Liquor License Branch is following up on the complaints from July 18 in regards to the Queen of Diamonds, and will be meeting with that owner this week. Apparently the owner has held a staff meeting following my complaint on July 18. We'll see if anything improves over the next couple of weekends. The liquor license co-ordinator informed me that the City made an agreement with the charter boat companies a few years ago that they can't have ANY music in False Creek and that they can only have indoor music, without speakers until they're far out in the harbour - past Kits Beach and Point Grey. (We know of course that they haven't been following that rule). And that the speakers are to point away from the beaches, although since the boats circle that's hard to maintain. I emphasized to the co-ordinator that even when the boats are far out in the harbour we can all still hear the pounding techno pop base, if nothing else, and that they need to turn down the base. Given that techno pop is all about that pounding base, that might be a hard one for them to follow! I told the co-ordinator that the Queen of Diamonds came back into Vancouver at 10.30pm on the 18th, playing their music loud and clear as they passed by Point Grey, the Kits foreshore and Kits Beach. Apparently that is against the rules, as is playing any music in the harbour at 10.30pm. Apparently every year the Liquor License Branch sends a letter to the charter companies reminding them of the rules. I was told that if the complaints continue their licenses can be revoked. But, in order to follow up on complaints, the culprit boats need to be identified by name otherwise the boat owners will claim it wasn't them. Photos and video are the best proof of course! So, if you're down on the beach, or on your balcony and one of these boats goes by take some photos and/or shoot some footage with your phone, and try to identify the name of the boat. Bring along binoculars if need be. Then call the VPD and make an official complaint, so that it's on the record. Their number is 604-717-3321. Thanks and have a quiet weekend - hopefully!
