Thanks for your support and signatures. I have another party boat incident to report. Last Saturday July 18, when the party boat the Queen of Diamonds (the worst offender it seems) was out cruising Vancouver harbour with speakers blaring for several hours in the afternoon and evening. The persistent thumping base was driving us crazy. I phoned the VPD at the end of the afternoon cruise as the boat was heading back to it's base at the Casino. An officer called me back and said that there had been 3 complaints already and that he'd have the marine unit look into it. (Not sure that they did anything this time although they did act on a previous complaint.) And then, an hour or so later, the Queen of Diamonds headed out again for the evening cruise. This time, as it passed by Kits Beach foreshore (at the foot of Trafalgar Street), the announcer blared out on the loudspeakers for all of Kits to hear "Hey Vancouver, let's make some f#@king loud noise". We couldn't believe it. This was repeated a couple more times at least as the boat headed out into the harbour. I immediately called the VPD again and then Vancouver Cruises, the boats owner, to complain I spoke to a guy named Russell at Vancouver Cruises who said we should be calling him rather than the police (or writing petitions) and he'd try to do something. But of course he was unable to reach the boat to have them turn it down. And he really doesn't get the problem. He says they follow the City noise by-laws and seems to think that if they stay below a certain decibel range they're ok. I pointed out that in fact, as far as amplified music, that's not the standard. By-law 6555 states that "Sounds from a radio, television, musical instrument or voice amplification equipment must not cause an unreasonable disturbance." http://vancouver.ca/your-government/noise-control-bylaw.aspx I read this out to Russell, along with the Park Board by-law mentioned in the petition, and he really didn't want to hear, he kept going on about decibels. At the same time he said he wanted to help! All we have to do is call. Anyway, his number is 604-763-2628 (Vancouver Cruises). It would be great if people could bombard him with calls every time there is a disturbance, as well as filing a complaint with the VPD, so that it's on the record. I've got photos and some video from the Queen of Diamonds cruises on Saturday, although the sound quality isn't that great - it's just the mics on my camera and iPhone and they don't capture it well enough. Anyway, I'm going to see what I can put together this week and file another complaint with the city about last Saturdays incidents, along with the petition update. Even City Council has to be somewhat concerned about party boat megaphones screaming out "f#@king" to everyone on the beaches and neighbourhoods.
