The Valparaiso University Theatre Department has maintained an exemplary program at the University for decades. It teaches a variety of immersive, hands-on experiences that include a vast array of life skills utilized by all alumni who participate, regardless of their career beyond campus. The relationships and connections forged through producing shows of sterling quality are long-lasting and even life-changing. In addition, the department gives back to the community in many ways; VU holds summer Shakespeare programs, performs important outreach productions, performs liturgical dramas in places of worship, and aids the University in celebrating special occasions like building dedications or the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Losing this program would not only be a devastating blow to all alumni and former faculty who gave and developed their talents, but it would also be a blow to the university. Taking this department away from the student and Valparaiso community would essentially leave VU to be another Purdue, which one can go down the road and earn the same degree at half the tuition. Other than IU, no other theatre programs would be in the northern region of Indiana. We, signatories to this petition, are fervently asking the University to reconsider and to continue allowing the performing arts to thrive at Valparaiso University. Especially in these hard times, when performers and audiences need an artistic outlet.
