Allow current Dinas Primary students to attend St Cyres secondary school.
The Issue
When children started attending Dinas Powys Primary School, the parents were under the impression their children would automatically transfer to St Cyres Comprehensive School. This was changed for 2020/2021 applications to attend St Cyres.
The catchment area for St Cyres has grown vastly to also included Wenvoe, Penarth, Sully and the Bendricks.
It has now come to light from Plaid Cymru Dinas Powys that Significant changes have been proposed to the catchment area for St Cyres School. The school has not been consulted so far. The scheme will see the catchment of Pencoedtre School, Barry added to the catchment of St Cyres. It is curious that given Pencoedtre School is currently being rebuilt that there is inadequate accommodation in the school. (Theres is yet to be a statement released by the VOG Council).
The pupils and their families effected by this are now going to go through unnecessary stress and turmoil, worrying about their children all because they live a few miles outside the catchment. Many of these families are now considering the upheaval of having to move house to enable their children to stay with their friends - adding a financial burden on said families because the houses are less affordable.
As I'm sure many of us can see why the Vale of Glamorgan Council changed the catchment areas however, most feel this should have only affected those starting at the primary school that academic year, rather than those who are already attending.
In what has already been a difficult year for all families involved, for the sake of their emotional and mental wellbeing, we are asking you to allow those children who are currently in year 1 and above at Dinas Powys primary to be allowed to attend St Cyres even if they are not living within the catchment area. (This would mean all the families who had children in Dinas Powys Primary prior to the change in catchment rules would not be effected by the new changes.)
Every signature is one step close to helping those children affected by the changes that were beyond their control.
